چکیده

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been recommended as an essential conservation tool for ecosystems and fisheries, with MPA coverage increasing four-fold globally since 2000. Despite the increased usage of MPAs, empirical results scientists are divided on effectiveness MPAs to reach their management goals. In 2009, South Atlantic Fishery Management Council established eight deep-water partially-protected off southeast United States (SEUS) coast goal protecting long-lived, deep-water, reef-associated fishery species. Data collected during fish trapping from 2000 2018 part a fisheries-independent survey were used evaluate impacts protection subset species in three these MPAs. There was modest positive shift larger observed two older one species, Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758), relative adjacent fished areas; however, there either no change or decrease managed reef abundance each areas. Based metrics, it does not appear that SEUS yet effective at Given low enforcement, future assessments should examine compliance within determine if lack success is due illegal fishing, examined, design before making final determination strategy fisheries managers SEUS.

Toward pristine biomass: reef fish recovery in coral reef marine protected areas in Kenya.

Identifying the rates of recovery of fish in no-take areas is fundamental to designing protected area networks, managing fisheries, estimating yields, identifying ecological interactions, and informing stakeholders about the outcomes of this management. Here we study the recovery of coral reef fishes through 37 years of protection using a space-for-time chronosequence of four marine national pa...

Fish assemblages and indicator species: reef fishes off the southeastern United States

Most approaches to f ishery management rely on results from stock assessment. Data-limited situations, however, may not conform to conventional assessment methods, necessitating other approaches to management (Kruse et al., 2005). One possible approach with data-limited stocks is to assign them to assemblages that are managed as units. Ideally, each assemblage would include at least one data-ri...

Climate Warming, Marine Protected Areas and the Ocean-Scale Integrity of Coral Reef Ecosystems

Coral reefs have emerged as one of the ecosystems most vulnerable to climate variation and change. While the contribution of a warming climate to the loss of live coral cover has been well documented across large spatial and temporal scales, the associated effects on fish have not. Here, we respond to recent and repeated calls to assess the importance of local management in conserving coral ree...

Marine protected areas and ocean basin management

1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...

Timing and locations of reef fish spawning off the southeastern United States

Managed reef fish in the Atlantic Ocean of the southeastern United States (SEUS) support a multi-billion dollar industry. There is a broad interest in locating and protecting spawning fish from harvest, to enhance productivity and reduce the potential for overfishing. We assessed spatiotemporal cues for spawning for six species from four reef fish families, using data on individual spawning con...
